Welcome to our handy guide to help you find the best tumble dryer on the market today.

Largely considered a luxury by those who don’t have one, but more often a necessity by those who do, a tumble dryer works by circulating hot air around wet clothing and ‘tumbling’ it like a washing machine to evaporate the moisture within. The Great British weather isn’t exactly known for its long periods of dry heat that suit hanging up washing outdoors for an ‘au naturel’ airing out, so having a tumble dryer allows wash loads to be processed faster.

As with all household appliances, technology is moving quickly in the tumble dryer space. There is now a great variety of models available, and there is enough on offer to suit every budget, house, and purpose. Let’s review some of the top-rated tumble dryers currently available on the market.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the most popular questions we get asked:

So, which tumble dryer is best?

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to household appliances or, more specifically, tumble dryers. However, when it comes to identifying which might be the best model for you, there are some considerations to take into account:

  • How large is the space available for installing the dryer? Will a regular tumble dryer fit?

  • How big a load does your tumble dryer need to hold? Those with larger capacities tend to cost more.

  • If you’re likely to use your dryer a lot, would an energy-efficient model save you lots of money on your bills?

  • Are you at home often and able to grab your laundry as soon as it’s dry, or do you need something with a timer or delayed auto-tumble feature?

  • Do you have a set colour scheme for the room your tumble dryer will be in that it needs to fit?

  • What’s your budget?

  • Are you looking for energy efficiency? If so, check out the official energy efficiency rating. A particular drum capacity? Small tumble dryers? Vented tumble dryers? A condenser dryer? Sensor drying or something with low running costs? Quick-drying time? A water container you need to empty every time, or a simple control panel? An easy-iron option? 8kg heat pump? A reversible door? A high-street brand or John Lewis model? A vented condenser or a general condenser dryer? Anti-crease options? An efficient heat pump? A heat pump tumble dryer? There are numerous factors to consider; a type of tumble dryer is available for everyone, even though some models are more expensive to purchase.

  • Water container size.

  • Iron dry options, heat pump tumble dryer, and condenser dryer options.

  • Do you need something with specific programmes for different fabrics?

  • Does the model you like come with a decent manufacturer’s warranty, and if so, how long for?

  • A look at integrated tumble dryers and heat pump model options.

Weigh your wants and needs in a dryer, and choose a model that suits you. We test tumble dryers of all sizes and budgets, including integrated tumble dryer options and stand-alone.

Are condenser tumble dryers better than vented tumble dryers?

Tumble dryers work in different ways. A condenser tumble dryer works by collecting all the moisture into a reservoir tank that is located within the dryer unit itself. Once the tank is full, the water needs to be emptied. A vented tumble dryer is what’s installed in homes where you see large plastic tubes hanging out of a window. The long, flexible plastic hose attaches to the tumble dryer, allowing excess moisture to flow out of it. This means that the dryer needs to be positioned close enough to an external wall (or window) to allow for proper drainage. Whether a condenser or vented tumble dryer is right for you depends on the model and your requirements; but if space is limited and you can’t guarantee it will be placed close to a window, then a condenser tumble dryer would work better than a vented. You should also look at heat pump tumble dryer options.

What other types of tumble dryers are there?

The newest models of tumble dryers are heat pump tumble dryer options, which work by using hot air to extract water from the items within, which then evaporates in a tank. There are essentially lots of types of tumble dryers. Heat pump tumble dryers are considerably more expensive than traditional condenser and vented models, as they’re newer and, as a result, tend to have more added features. The most energy-efficient tumble dryers are heat pump dryers, so that initial investment will soon pay off in lowered energy bills. Heat pump tumble dryers come in all shapes, sizes, and price points.

Is it worth having a tumble dryer?

If you have a lot of laundry to do and struggle to dry it quickly enough, or find that your radiators are often draped with clothing and your house starts to feel a little damp, a tumble dryer is for you. Tumble dryers do take up room but allow for a fast turnaround of laundry and fewer ironing loads. Drying laundry sufficiently and without it retaining a lingering damp smell is particularly challenging in winter and during colder weather. Hanging it internally when wet can cause dampness to spread quickly throughout a home as the moisture levels in the air increase rapidly. A tumble dryer is by no means an essential member of the white goods category, but once you have one, you’ll honestly never look back. Its convenience and ease transform the way you manage your usual chores and certainly lessen the load in a domestic sense, but not in a laundry one!

What We Looked For - Test Tumble Dryers

As you are probably aware, buying a tumble dryer is no easy task. When we looked at various options, we looked at the following different types of tumble dryer models and ways to grade them:

  • Condenser tumble dryer (or a condenser dryer) - we look at these traditional condenser tumble dryers and heat pump condenser types, which use a water tank to collect the excess water.

  • Heat pump tumble dryer - we looked for heat pump technology; these heat pump dryer options tend to be more expensive than a standard condenser. We have explored heat pump tumble dryer options in the guide, selecting some top models. Heat pump dryers and heat pump technology are two of the most significant elements that many consider when buying, with many opting for an 8kg heat pump tumble dryer.

  • Vented tumble dryer options

  • Drum capacity and drum size  - although the aim is for dry clothes, different households have different needs, so we look at different sizes and loading capacities, also called drum capacity. We think that drum capacity is often overlooked.

  • Energy efficiency - we seek energy-efficient options to reduce running costs, shorten drying times, lower energy bills, and achieve overall efficient drying. Energy consumption is something that more people are concerned with and can also save time and money.

  • Reversible door and reverse action spins

  • Anti-crease function and easy iron options

  • The best deals - you can dry your clothes, knowing we have looked for the best value for money in all our models.

  • Drying process - various options and times to dry clothes quickly and efficiently.

  • Running Costs - low running costs to save on those electricity bills and annual running costs.

  • Costs - budget tumble dryer options to expensive tumble dryers (and the most expensive tumble dryers around!).

  • Heat Pump Models.

We recommend that when buying a tumble dryer, you take these factors above into consideration.
