Here are the most popular questions we get asked by people who are looking for a dishwasher best suited to their needs:
The best brands of dishwashers are Miele, SMEG, and Bosch. Read our full guide to find a wide range of models reviewed.
When browsing for dishwashers, you’ll be confronted by a range of brand names you recognise, as well as several you won’t.
There are lots of European manufacturers producing dishwashers due to their prevalence on the continent (in Germany, over 75% of households have a dishwasher!), so these names may not be immediately recognisable to you.
However, there is no one dominant player when it comes to dishwasher manufacturers; it’s a highly competitive market, and there are many good options, from the Miele and Bosch 800 Series to cheaper Essentials models, and many options in between. You are almost spoilt for choice. Our guide to the best dishwashers (UK) will hopefully help you to narrow this search a little.
The best dishwasher for you and your household depends on your cleaning requirements, budget, space and usage but we really like the Bosch Serie 2.
You will need to identify your individual needs, such as the number of place settings required. Do you require an Eco wash? Are you going to be cleaning pots and pans? Do you need a wine glass rack? Are you looking for a dishwasher for your business or household?
We always recommend making a list of what you're looking for before embarking on the purchasing journey. In doing so you will find the right dishwasher for you.
Essentially, there is no single best model available, as what suits one household may not work for another. The key to identifying the best, most appropriate, and relevant dishwasher for you is to research thoroughly and make an informed decision before making a purchase.
The features you should look for in the best dishwashers are the following:
Place settings - how many place settings does the dishwasher have? How many place settings do you have in the household as normal (these are the number of dividers, etc, within the machine and the number of places at the table you want to clean for)? Place setting options are obviously essential to know so that you get a dishwasher that is the right size for you. Typically the more place settings that a dishwasher can take, the larger the dishwasher is.
Model type - do you have a preferred type of dishwasher? Perhaps the great Bosch series (dishwasher bosch models are excellent) or a classic Sharp dishwasher? The hardy Miele dishwasher? We cover lots of versions in our best dishwasher guide and look at models and different varieties, including: fully integrated dishwashers, integrated dishwashers or semi-integrated models. We also look at slimline dishwashers, which are becoming increasingly popular.
Timing and delay start functions - this function means that you’re able to start a wash overnight (when energy tariffs are lower). Would you like to have this feature?
Eco programmes - these are more important in today's world. Some dishwashers have built-in eco programmes for more energy-efficient washes. These lower power cleans are able to optimise water and energy usage, which will save money and also be kinder to the environment.
Glass programmes - many dishwasher models have specifically designed elements to gently clean and dry glass, porcelain and delicate tableware. Some also have a rinse aid (good for delicate wine glass cleans). Sometimes, extra "top rack options are also available; the top rack can just be a wine glass rack if needed.
Quick wash programmes - these offer an express clean when you need to clean and also dry kitchenware fast. These are often important in busy households.
Stainless steel models - Nowadays, stainless steel dishwashers are hugely popular due to their durability and ease of use.
A separate cutlery tray - most dishwashers have these
Variety of cleaning cycle options
Stylish dishwasher door
Overall energy rating - many now consider an energy rating as hugely important, as it can save money on bills in the future. Therefore, looking for a good energy rating is more than just saving the planet; it's also saving on bills. All the models we reviewed in our best dishwashers guide had excellent energy rating readings. For more in-depth info on a particular energy rating, visit the manufacturer's page. Many models now have eco wash options, which are very low energy consumption cleans favoured by many and can be done overnight (mentioned above). We look at modern dishwashers with top energy ratings as well as integrated models to fit into kitchen cabinets.
Type of dishwasher and your space - what type of dishwasher best suits your space? An integrated dishwasher, a fully integrated dishwasher or a normal freestanding dishwasher? Each kitchen and space is different but all will get your dirty dishes clean in no time at all, however, many people are governed by actual physical space particularly if living in flats or if the dishwasher is going in a utility room. Additionally, fully integrated dishwashers must fit into existing cupboard space.
Cutlery basket - do you need a cutlery tray or cutlery basket, and how big do you need this cutlery tray to be? Cutlery tray options are far more advanced than they used to be, with some now able to be cleaned 360 degrees. Every dishwasher will have one but they are way more advanced than they used. This is one of the most popular dishwasher features that gets mentioned.
Water consumption - again linked to energy usage, how much water does the model need? Is your supply good enough? Also think about your water type (some water, such as "hard water" could affect the clean so you may need to think about adding a filter).
Noise level - some dishwashers are louder than others. Again, most of the manufacturers will carry a noise level, most are, however, now much quieter than they were.
Wi-Fi-enabled models and other innovative features - yes, there are such things as smart dishwashers, like everything else in life. This means that you can control some models from your phone or tablet. This is great for busy professionals and a great added perk.
Budget - are you looking for a budget dishwasher or something more expensive? As with most things in life, "you get what you pay for" but there is value to be had with some of the more cheap dishwasher models we highlight.
Easy to load - you want to make sure it is easy to load wine glasses, plates, pans and knives and forks. Ease of use is paramount.
Adjustable racks - most of the best dishwasher options now feature this, allowing you to customise the layout of your dishwasher to suit your cleaning needs.
Control panel - Most top dishwashers are easy to use. A decent control panel is so important, nobody likes anything too over complicated.
Best buy - some cheaper Essential and "Best Buy" versions are now excellent value for money. It's not necessarily "buy cheap, buy twice", as the saying used to go; some of these cheaper models are the best dishwasher options around.
Energy-efficient models are assigned official energy efficiency ratings, which directly impact their running costs. The more energy-efficient, the cheaper it is to run. As mentioned above, we also offer eco-wash options to help you save on water and energy. water consumption is something that many people are more conscious of in today's world.
Rinse aid options, sensor wash, and water consumption will also impact both cleaning and drying performance.
Do you want a full-size or a smaller model? A full-size model will obviously cost more.
Control panel - something to easy to use from a control panel point of view.
Are you looking for a high-end dishwasher or something more budget-friendly? More expensive doesn't necessarily mean more highly rated.
Washing and drying - some now don't just wash but dry! If this is a feature you'd like make sure your model does this.
Is a Budget dishwasher any good? Yes, the price of dishwashers has come down in recent years, and budget options can be surprisingly good.
Can I get a wi-fi enabled dishwasher? Yes, as with all electrical devices, they can be controlled via Wi-Fi, allowing you to turn them on and off from your mobile device.
If any of these features are relevant to you, consider finding a washer that includes them.
From those factors we award:

It used to be that you lined up your kitchenware in the dishwasher, put a tablet in the drawer and pressed the "on" switch, but now dishwashers can do a whole lot more than just rinse your plates. They have really developed over the past decades.
As you can see, buying a dishwasher is no easy job, and there are lots of things to consider.
We recommend spending around £500 on a dishwasher.
However, there is no set price range that qualifies a dishwasher as quality or not; roughly speaking, you get what you pay for.
Budget models start at around £200, but for a specifically designed WiFi-connected eco-friendly model, you could pay up to £1,500. Also, prices for fully integrated dishwasher options and freestanding dishwasher options vary.
A fully integrated dishwasher is a dishwasher that is ‘hidden’ behind a cupboard door that matches the rest of the kitchen or utility room’s aesthetic.
These integrated dishwasher models are prevalent in new-build homes and are often included as part of a new kitchen installation to achieve a consistent look throughout. In some cases, the integrated dishwasher is provided as part of the kitchen, but in most cases, any dishwasher can fit into the space behind the door or have the door directly applied to the front of it.
The concept of a mechanical dishwasher dates back to the 19th century when several inventors began developing machines to automate the task of dishwashing. In 1850, Joel Houghton patented a hand-cranked device that splashed water on dishes. However, it was not until the 1880s that Josephine Cochrane invented the first practical dishwasher.
Josephine Cochrane, a wealthy socialite from the United States, wanted a machine that could wash dishes quickly and effectively. She designed a machine with a motorised wheel that sprayed water onto dishes held in a wire rack. Cochrane's dishwasher became a commercial success, laying the foundation for modern dishwasher technology.
Over the years, dishwashers underwent significant advancements. In the 1920s, dishwashers started to incorporate heating elements to boost water temperature, and by the 1950s, they included jet spray systems and multiple wash cycles. Since then, dishwashers have continued to evolve, incorporating features like energy-efficient designs, adjustable racks, and sophisticated control panels.
Benefits of Dishwashers:
Time-saving: One of the most significant advantages of dishwashers is their ability to save time and effort. Handwashing dishes can be a time-consuming chore, especially for larger households or after hosting gatherings. With a dishwasher, you can load the dirty dishes, set the appropriate cycle, and let the machine do the work, freeing up your time for other tasks.
Water and Energy Efficiency: Modern dishwashers are designed to be more water and energy-efficient compared to handwashing. Dishwashers use a controlled amount of water and optimise their usage throughout the cleaning process. Additionally, dishwashers feature energy-saving technologies such as efficient water heating and insulation, which help reduce utility bills and conserve resources.
Sanitation and Hygiene: Dishwashers are highly effective at sanitising dishes, utensils, and cookware. They employ high water temperatures, powerful jets, and detergent action to effectively remove bacteria, food residues, and germs. This ensures that your dishes are thoroughly cleaned and sanitised, promoting better hygiene in your kitchen.
Consistent Cleaning Results: Dishwashers provide consistent cleaning results, as they follow preset cycles with optimised water pressure, temperature, and detergent distribution. This helps ensure that your dishes come out clean every time, without the variations that can occur with handwashing.
Convenience and Organisation: Dishwashers offer convenience and help keep your kitchen organised. They come with adjustable racks, dividers, and specialised compartments to accommodate different dish sizes, cookware, and utensils. Dishwasher features, such as cutlery baskets and folding tines, allow for easy loading and unloading, making the process efficient and hassle-free.
Preserving Cookware and Tableware: Handwashing dishes, especially delicate or expensive items, can pose a risk of breakage or damage. Dishwashers provide a gentle and controlled cleaning environment, reducing the chances of accidental breakage. This helps preserve the longevity and quality of your cookware, tableware, and glassware.
In summary, dishwashers have a rich history of evolution and offer numerous benefits. They save time, energy, and water while providing efficient and hygienic cleaning. With their convenience and consistent results, dishwashers have become an indispensable appliance in modern kitchens.
The best way to load a Dishwasher is often discussed but rarely agreed upon; however, there are some golden rules you should know before embarking on your first wash load. Consider the following:
Plates should only go between the tines specifically moulded for them (these are called place settings). They’re designed for optimum cleaning, so stacking them elsewhere won’t get the proper rinse.
Forks and spoons should be placed head-down in a cutlery basket so that when the debris is removed, they don’t slide and wash down the rest of their bodies.
All dishware should face the same way – otherwise, you’re guaranteeing a different clean from different directions.
Mixing cutlery assumes a better wash, as cutlery of the same type tends to ‘nest’ together and stick, so water can’t get to it as easily as it should
Larger items should be placed along the sides and corners of the bottom rack. This allows for maximum water exposure without the risk of them dislodging.
Hope that is helpful!
